APTEC started in late 2024 with eight Auckland schools who wanted to improve the quality of teacher education. There are currently 3 student-teachers involved in the 2024 APTEC pilot. In 2025 there will be 20 schools and close to 40 student-teachers studying and working in schools. You can apply directly to the school(s) you’re interested in working with. Upon acceptance at one school, you’ll spend the year under that school’s tutelage, working with staff at that school campus. The opportunity to be fully immersed in a school-based environment and a school-led programme is a unique addition to the current university-based teacher training model. Your coursework will be completed through the University of Waikato’s online programme as your day to day work is supervised by teachers in your host school.
