Auckland Primary Teacher
Education Collaborative

Are you thinking of becoming a primary or intermediate teacher?

Try school-based teacher education in Auckland and earn while you learn.

Where will I train?

APTEC started in late 2024 with eight Auckland schools who wanted to improve the quality of teacher education. There are currently 3 student-teachers involved in the 2024 APTEC pilot. In 2025 there will be 20 schools and close to 40 student-teachers studying and working in schools. You can apply directly to the school(s) you’re interested in working with. Upon acceptance at one school, you’ll spend the year under that school’s tutelage, working with staff at that school campus. The opportunity to be fully immersed in a school-based environment and a school-led programme is a unique addition to the current university-based teacher training model. Your coursework will be completed through the University of Waikato’s online programme as your day to day work is supervised by teachers in your host school.

What will my costs be?

Different schools offer different levels of support. All schools pay the university costs. In addition the minimum financial support you will receive will be a $12,500 stipend for the time that you are studying. In other cases you maybe paid as a teacher aide or unqualified teacher with a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT).
